A privileged position
One hundred and fifty miles South of Paris, by the A77 motorway, the Benedictine Prieury and the town of La Charite sur Loire which surrounds it, are built, as an amphitheatre, along the longest river in France. It is its geographic situation, its spiritual importance and its cultural richness that make La Charité a destination of choice.
A nature reserve
The Loire was classified as a Nature Reserve in 1995 on a stretch of 15 kilometres starting in La Charité. It is said to be the last wild river in Europe. The town is surrounded by some of the most famous vineyards such as Pouilly or Sancerre and by the majestic state-owned forest of the Bertranges. You will be able to go for long interesting walks, go canoeing, follow the touristic pre- established cycle routes or simply stroll or sit along the shore of the Loire.
An historic heritage of exceptional quality
The traceable history of the town truly started in the XIth Century when the town’s name was changed to La Charité because of the generosity shown by the good fathers “of the monastery”. The town was previously called Seyr that is “the town in the sun”. It is also in the XIth Century that the edification of the priory started and therefore it is when the town was truly born.
Eldest daughter of Cluny, classified by UNESCO to the World Patrimony of Humanity under the banner of Chemins de Saint Jacques de Compostelle, the town with the Roman church of Notre-Dame has been, since the Middle Ages an important destination for pilgrims.
A town in quest of its inheritance
The Benedictine Gardens shelter the archeological remains of the Eglise Saint Laurent discovered in 1975.
The city walls or remparts, the area of the priory with its medieval narrow streets and old buildings, all show the marks of the past eras they have been through.
Shops: Between tradition and originality
The town offers a good selection of small shops, boutiques, bakers, confectioners, traiteurs selling prepared dishes to take away, local specialities, a weekly market on Saturday morning and also the main supermarkets.
There is a great choice of pizzerias, cafés and restaurants for all tastes from exclusive restaurants to family orientated places or even café-théatre style eateries.

Since the year 2000, a number of second-hand book sellers and artisans have settled in the old parts of La Charité giving the town a reputation of town of the book and more specifically, town of the word.
